2003년 앨범으로 Deep Purple에서 Ian Gillan의 뒤를 이어 보컬을 맡았던 David Coverdale은 Burn,Stormbringer,Come Taste The Band 앨범까지 발매한 후 탈퇴하고 현재도 Whitesnake 활동을 계속하고 있는 건 다들 아시겠고 그와 함께 했던 Whitesnake 구성원중 오리지널 멤버였던 Bernie Marsden,Micky Moody 그리고 Neil Murray 이렇게 3명이 다시 뭉쳐 1999년부터 Company Of Snake란 이름으로 활동을 하게 된다.공연도 여러번 가지고 반응도 무척 좋아 CD도 발매하게 되고 2002년경 그룹 이름을 M3로 바꾸고 2003년 8월 13일 공연을 담아 발매한 앨범이 바로 이것.

After recording three successful LP's with Deep Purple as the bands lead singer, "Burn", "Stormbringer", and "Come Taste the Band" 9 (which was released in 1975)], Deep Purple decided it was time too put the band on hold and concentrate on solo ventures. In 1976 David Coverdale contacted long time friend Micky Moody and ask him if he would do the guitar work for his first ever solo release timely named "Whitesnake". After a moderately successful tour the two hit the studio and began working on what would become David's second solo effort 1978's "Northwinds". In late 1978 David and Micky with the help of Bernie Marsden (guitar), Neil Murrey (bass), David Dowle (drums), and Pete Solley (keybords) the band Whitesnake was born. From 1978 to 1983 the band released nine albums. In 1983 Micky Moody was the last original band member of Whitesnake to leave or be fired.
In 1999 three original Whitesnake members Micky Moody, Bernie Marsden, and Neil Murrey came together for a tour under the band name 'Company of Snakes' with Stefan Berggren on vocals and John Lingwood on drums. The shows where such a success they released a live CD titled "Here They go again". February 25th 2002 'Company of Snakes' released their debut CD titled "Burst the Bubble". Sometime between February 2002 and October 2003 the three original band members decided to change the bands name from 'Company of Snakes' to 'M3'.
With this live release 'M3' incorporate Jimmy Copley (Paul Rogers & Tony Iommi) on drums, Mark Stanway (Magnum & Grad Slam) on keyboards and legendary vocalist Tony Martin of (Black Sabbath) and (Empire) fame. This live release consist of eleven live original Whitesnake songs. One of the many thing I really like about this release is that Tony does not try to copy David Coverdale. Tony sings every song a Tony Martian would do them not as David Coverdale does them. The bands sound is utterly amazing. There is absolutely no difference in the musical sound of the band from 1978 and 2003. The band sounds just as good if not better now as they did back in the day. "Don't Go Breaking My Heart Again" has a mean Neil Murray sounding live bass line. The backing vocals are right on cue just like they should be. During the solo for "Don't Go Breaking My Heart Again" Jimmy adds a few double bass drum patterns which really sets the breakdown section up. If you close your eyes when listening to "Lonely Days Lonely Nights" you will swear it's a Coverdale/Hughes duet. "Hit 'An Run" kicks off with a drum intro. At times during the pre-chorus Tony's vocals have that Coverdale/Hughes sound to them. The live backing harmonies on "Ready 'an Willing" are huge. The intro to "Ain't gonna Cry no more" completely blew me away!!! Live or studio this is one of the greatest sounding songs Coverdale/Moody ever wrote. "Ain't no Love in the Heart of the City" kicks off with a huge extra guitar intro. The backing vocals and crowd participation on this song is probably the best I've ever heard live. "Here I Go Again" was originally on Whitesnake's 1982 release "Saint's & Sinners" then David re-recorded it with a few different lyrics in 1987 on their self titled release titled 'Witesnake'. Then recorded an acoustic version on "Starker's in Tokyo" in 1997. Plus, I had the chance to see Whitesnake perform it live in 1988. So I guess I am a little bit of an expert on the song. All the versions of "Here I Go Again" are killer. But I must say out of the many versions I've heard, M3's is by far the best. The backing harmonies of the choruses really set the song off and way a head of the other versions.
If you are a eighties hard rock fan or Whitesnake fan then this is an absolute must have!!! "Classic Snake Live" vol. 1 is the best live album of 2003.
